  Kurt Zelazny has tied hundreds of halfbacks for Cimarron Creek Fly shop in Montrose, CO.  The halfback is one of the most popular patterns used in the Gunnison River to imitate the Salmon Fly nymph.  This pattern works in the East Portal, the Black Canyon, the Gunnison Gorge, and the lower Gunnison down to Delta.

 

Step 1. Attach 10 wraps of lead at the front of the fly Step 2. Cover lead wraps with thread.

Step 3.  Tie in 6 pheasant tail fibers, tie as shown.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 
Step 4. Attach peacock herls at bend of hook. Step 5. Attach hackle at bend of hook. Step 6. Wrap peacock forward slightly past half way.

 

     
Step 7. Palmer 3 wraps of hackle. Step 8.Pull shell back forward and tie off. Step 9. Wrap peacock forward to the eye.
